You are the Mighty Lord,
who has none like Him,
and He is the All Hearing, the All Seeing.
This is a month which You have made; exalted, honored, ennobled and excelled over the other months.
It is the month in which You have made fasting obligatory on me, and it is the month of Ramadhan, in which You sent down the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind, having clear signs of guidance and distinction. You have placed in it the night of power, and made it better than a thousand months. O One who favours, and none favours You, favour me by saving me from the fire, amongst the ones You favour, and make me enter Heaven, by Your mercy,
O the most Merciful

Understanding the Significance of Dua in Ramadan

Dua, translated as supplication or prayer, holds a pivotal role in Islam as a means of direct communication with Allah. Particularly during Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, the significance of dua amplifies.

The Qur’an emphasises this sacred act, stating, “Your Lord says, ‘Call on Me and I will answer you’” (Surah Ghafir, 40:60). Additionally, the Prophet Muhammad conveyed the profound impact of dua, affirming, “Nothing can change the Divine decree except dua” (Al-Tirmidhi).

As Ramadan draws near, Muslims intensify their focus on spiritual growth and purification. Dua becomes a vital tool in this journey, serving as a conduit for expressing gratitude, seeking guidance, and finding solace in the remembrance of Allah. Through dua, believers deepen their connection with the divine, fostering a sense of inner peace and strength.

In the sacred journey of Ramadan, dua emerges as a powerful tool for spiritual elevation and closeness to Allah. As believers engage in these supplications, they not only seek blessings and forgiveness but also cultivate a profound sense of connection and devotion, transforming this holy month into a time of profound spiritual growth and renewal.

Ramadan is the perfect time to reset spiritually, renew our intentions, and commit to forming new habits. Ramadan is also a special time for reflection and repentance, Allah (SWT) mercy is showered upon us and our chances of being forgiven for our sins are increased.

The Prophet (SAW) said: “Dua is the essence of worship.”

Dua is the weapon of a believer because of its power and ability to protect us and grant us victory. It is said that the Dua of a fasting person will always be accepted. Thus, knowing what Duas to make during Ramadan, when to make them, and how to make them is essential.

1. Dua at the approach of Ramadan

Hadhrat Ubaadah bin Saamit narrates that the Prophet (SAW) used to teach the Sahaabah this Dua at the approach of the Month of Ramadan:

Allahumma Sallimni li Ramadan, Wa Sallim Ramadana li, Wasallamhu li Mutaqabbala

O Allah! Safeguard me for the Month of Ramadan (by making me see the Month of Ramadan healthy and fit so that I can take maximum benefit from it), and safeguard the Month of Ramadan for me (by making the conditions in it such that I can take maximum benefit from it) and accept it from me.

10. Dua for Laylatul Qadr (to read during the last ten days of Ramadan)

Aisha (RA) narrated, “I asked the Messenger of Allah: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: ‘Say:

Allahumma innaka Afuwwun [Karimun ] tuhibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee

O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me

Life is full of hardship. It’s the way Allah created the world to test us and see who is the best of us in deeds. However, Ramadan reminds us that anything is possible. We can establish our link to Allah by reconnecting through prayer and Dua, pour out our feelings and emotions, and allow ourselves to be guided to what is right.

Allah hears all Duas, whether they are in English or Arabic. We wish you a blessed Ramadan full of accepted Duas. Ameen!

What is Laylatul Qadr?

Laylatul Qadr is one of the significant nights in the month of Ramadan on which the Holy Quran was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In English, it is called “Night of Power”, “Night of Destiny”, “Night of Glory”, and or “Night of Decree”. Although the exact date of the night is uncertain, it is believed to occur on one of the last 10 odd days (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th) of the holy month of Ramadan.

Muslims are encouraged to seek out the Night of Power during the last 10 nights of Ramadan by engaging in acts of worship such as reciting the Quran, offering extra prayers, making dua (supplication), and engaging in acts of charity. Many Muslims spend the entire night in prayer and reflection, seeking to deepen their connection with Allah and to receive His blessings.

Laylatul Qadr’s benefits and importance

In the Surah Al-Qadr it is mentioned that this night is better than a thousand months and that the angels and angel Jibril (Gabriel) descend from heaven to the earth with myriads of tasks, leading to a night of peace, blessings, and divine guidance till dawn. However, Muslims around the world observe the last 10 odd days of Ramadan in supplication, prayers, and dua until dawn. Any good deed on this single night is rewarded with 83 years of continuous worship. Indeed, this is a huge blessing that Allah the Almighty has bestowed upon the Muslims.

Laylatul Qadr A’amal

There are many A’amal/deeds on this holy night but the following are the most 4 common things you can do in the Night of Power;

  • Recitation of the Holy Quran: Ramadan is considered the month in which the Holy Quran is revealed, so reciting the Holy Quran during this month and especially in the last 10 odd days of Ramadan is highly considered.
  • Attending Duas in the Masjid: There are many duas and supplications for this special night, if you cannot do it alone at home, it is highly recommended to join other worshipers in the Masjid and perform duas in the congregational till dawn.
  • Give Sadaqah: In the month of Ramadan, the reward for every good deed and charity multiplies 70 times, and the reward for the good deed on this special night (Laylatul Qadr) is as performing it continuously for 83 years. However, giving sadaqah at any time of the year is applicable and rewarded especially in the month of Ramadan.
  • Perform Itikaaf (solitude): Laylatul Qadr is considered to be one of the last 10 odd days in the Holy month of Ramadan, so in order not to miss that special night, Itikaaf, which means staying inside the Masjid for 10 consecutive days and nights in praying, and supplication in the presence of Allah. During this period, the person is disconnected from the materialistic world, having no mobile phones, no contact with family and business, and merely focusing on his/her worship. This is the best opportunity to seek Allah’s pleasure and seek forgiveness for all the bad deeds one has done during the year(s).

Surah Laylatul Qadr

Indeed, it is We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory (1) And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is? (2) The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months. (3) That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit1 descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter. (4) It is all peace until the break of dawn. (5)

Taraweeh Salah Details

Taraweeh (also spelled Tarawih) is a special voluntary (Sunnah) prayer performed exclusively during Ramadan after the Isha prayer. It involves extended recitation of the Quran and is typically done in congregation at mosques, fostering community and spiritual focus. The word “Taraweeh” comes from the Arabic for “rest,” as worshippers take brief rests between sets of rak’ahs.matwproject.orgmuslim.sg

How to Perform Taraweeh

  • Timing: Starts right after Isha and can extend into the night. In Mumbai, aim to join at local mosques like Jama Masjid around 8-9 PM post-Isha.
  • Number of Rak’ahs: Commonly 8 or 20 rak’ahs (units of prayer), performed in pairs (2 rak’ahs per set). After every 4 rak’ahs, a short rest or supplication is observed. Follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who prayed 8 rak’ahs, though some schools perform 20.sunaan.comsams-usa.net
  • Structure: Each rak’ah includes Quran recitation (often one Juz per night to complete the Quran by Ramadan’s end). Led by an Imam (Hafiz if possible). Women can perform at home or in designated mosque areas.

Key Quranic Ayat on Ramadan and Fasting

These verses from Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183-187) outline the obligation and wisdom of fasting.

Translation: O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.
Translation: [Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them]—then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship]—a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers good—then it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.
Translation: The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey—then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
Translation: And when My servants ask you concerning Me—indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
Translation: It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.
